Charles Leclerc believes Lewis Hamilton can still win an eighth Formula 1 championship “in the right car”.

For the first time since 2013, the Briton is not a central figure in the title race as the new regulations put an end to Mercedes’ run of success.

That means Hamilton, who controversially missed out on surpassing Michael Schumacher to become F1’s first octuple-time champion last year, will have to wait until 2023 at the earliest for his next chance.

But asked if the 37-year-old still has what it takes to win another championship, Ferrari driver Leclerc was diplomatic.

“I think in the right car, yes, because he is a great driver,” the Monegasque told the Daily Mail. “But if it’s him or me for the championship, I’d choose myself obviously.

“Sorry, Lewis.”

2023 also marks Hamilton’s final year in his current contract at Mercedes, but F1 motorsport boss Ross Brawn doubts he is considering retirement for now.

“Amid all the glitz and glamour, you still have a very determined racing driver,” he told the Evening Standard.

“He’s still supremely fit and capable. I’m pretty certain he wants to win that eighth championship and if not this year, as looks likely, then next year.

“I don’t know enough about what Mercedes’ issues are to know if they can be fixed with the concept of car they have or whether they have to review the concept.

“They will sort it out, I’m sure…but it’s obviously very fragile what they are dealing with.”
