Hamilton: Return of silver Mercedes wouldn’t deter from diversity push

Lewis Hamilton has no issue with Mercedes potentially reverting to their traditional Silver livery from 2022.

The reigning Formula 1 champions have run a predominantly black paint scheme since the delayed start to last season to show their support for and in solidarity with Hamilton in the fight against racism.

But asked how he would feel if Mercedes did switch back to their historical colours next season, the Briton admitted it wouldn’t change anything.

“I don’t have a particular feeling towards it,” Hamilton said. “I’m obviously not involved in that particularly right now for next year and Mercedes is originally the ‘Silver Arrows’.

“When I asked if we could go to make the car black last year, in terms of the symbolism, and what we intend to do moving forward in terms of support, I wasn’t expecting it to last particularly long, and we carried it into a second season, which is awesome.

“If it goes back it will be a nice change and it doesn’t deter us from the changes that we are making internally, as we continue to truly push for diversity, even working with all of our partners.

“Even the other day with UBS, we had these young kids come, trying to inspire the next generation of engineers from all different backgrounds. We’ve got a good programme going, so it doesn’t make a difference.”

Hamilton has been busy with his Commission, which aims to increase opportunities in motorsport for minorities, while also donating £20m to his Mission 44 charity earlier this summer to support young under-represented groups.

Meanwhile, Mercedes has also launched ‘Accelerate 25’ with the aim of improving diversity within the company.
