Hamilton wants to prove he is better than Verstappen in equal cars

Lewis Hamilton has again welcomed the prospect of teaming up with Max Verstappen if only to prove he is better than the Dutchman.

There has been speculation the Red Bull driver could jump to Mercedes as early as next season should his current season not meet performance clauses in his current contract.

However, getting the approval of Hamilton has been seen as the main hurdle to forming the ‘dream team’ but the five-time Formula 1 champion insists that isn’t the case.

“I’ve honestly got no problem with it,” Hamilton said via Sky Sports in Hungary.

“As I’ve said before, I like working with Valtteri. I don’t know how that [Verstappen] dynamic would work for the team, but I’m not saying it would, or would not.

“I see positives and potential negatives, obviously there’s always positives and negatives with different people that you end up working with.”

In recent weeks, there have been claims that Verstappen’s performance is on the same level if not ahead of Hamilton and proving that isn’t the case is becoming another motivation for the 34-year-old.

“In some ways, it works well for me because I see stories that we’ve got different cars and that’s the only [reason I beat Verstappen],” he said.

“That gives me an opportunity to show you that that’s not the case!”

On a separate note, Hamilton declared himself back in peak condition ahead of the Hungarian GP having struggled with illness last weekend in Hockenheim.

“I am going to be 100 per cent by the weekend,” he stated. “I still need a bit more rest but I definitely feel in much better fighting shape.

“I am looking forward to getting back in the car, which is completely different to how I felt last Friday when getting in the car was not a good thing.”
