Charles Leclerc ensured Ferrari completed a Friday double by leading second practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Monegasque improved teammate Carlos Sainz’s benchmark from the first session by three-tenths, setting a 1m18.445s in the slightly cooler late afternoon temperatures.

FP2’s big surprise was McLaren as Lando Norris sat just two-tenths behind Leclerc in second despite a wide moment exiting the final corner.

Daniel Ricciardo also validated the Woking-based outfit’s strong single-lap pace in fifth, behind Sainz, who set his best time on a second flying lap, and a frustrated Max Verstappen in fourth.

Fernando Alonso kept Alpine in touch in sixth, with Sebastian Vettel featuring well up the order in seventh as Aston Martin’s intriguing rear wing appeared to show promise.

At the other end of the scale, Mercedes’ struggle for pace and balance was highlighted by George Russell in eighth and Lewis Hamilton only 11th.

Sergio Perez was also well off the pace in ninth in the second Red Bull and Valtteri Bottas rounded out the top 10 for Alfa Romeo.

Further down, AlphaTauri disappointed with Pierre Gasly only 15th and Yuki Tsunoda down in 19th, Haas too were lower than expected in 16th and 17th for Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher respectively.

Williams ended Friday slowest overall as Nicholas Latifi sat 18th and Alex Albon finished bottom of the timesheet after going off on his best lap.
