Imola officially ready to host F1 again as AlphaTauri arrange test

Imola has finally regained FIA Grade 1 status in a major step towards potentially hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2020.

The historic circuit, which last welcomed F1 back in 2006, has been looking for a route back onto the calendar ever since a major upgrade of the facilities and track was undertaken back in 2008.

That hasn’t yet been possible, with Monza having a tight grip on the Italian GP, but with the sport looking for potential venues to fill its 2020 schedule, Imola may now have the opportunity to return.

“With the renewal of the licence we are in the condition to host an F1 Grand Prix, having all the standards requested by the FIA,” said Formula Imola chairman Uberto Selvatico Estense.

“We hope that such a dream becomes true with the teamwork of the Institutions and Territory.”

The addition of Imola could mean F1 holds three races in one country for the first in its history, with Monza and also Mugello now expected to be part of the revised calendar in September.

But before then, AlphaTauri has confirmed they will take their 2020 car for a filming day at the fabled venue, as they adjust to the new coronavirus measures that F1 will race under starting next month.
