Sebastian Vettel has opened up on his love for competing in Formula 1, saying he feels like he's smiling when behind the wheel.

The four-time world champion has been increasingly critical of the sport over the past year, admitting his dislike for the current hybrid engines and slamming the style of racing, particular after his controversial penalty in Canada last June.

But as speculation continues over his future, with his contract expiring at Ferrari at the end of the year, Vettel has made is clear competing in F1 still gives him a buzz like nothing else.

“I love the speed, I love the sensation in the car,” he said.

“I’ve tried lots of things but I haven’t found anything that gives me as much as putting on the helmet, getting into the car and trying to come out on top.

“I’m not sure if I do smile but I feel like I’m smiling when I drive the car.”

Another question regarding Vettel is whether he still has the performance to compete at the front of the grid in F1.

This after making errors at key moments in the past few seasons as well as losing out to Charles Leclerc in the Monegasque's first year at Ferrari in 2019.

“I think he has made some silly mistakes, which I’m sure he will say are silly mistakes as well," 2009 world champion Jenson Button admitted to Sky Sports.

“But I also think he will come out the other side of this as a better driver, I really do.

“He’s got someone that has really pushed him and beaten him throughout this season. So I really think he will come back stronger.

“He has immense talent and we will see that once we get racing.”
