James Allison hopes Toto Wolff remains at Mercedes "for many years to come" amid uncertainty over his future.

The Austrian's contract as motorsport boss ends after 2020, and last weekend in Barcelona he admitted to being in a "moment of reflection" as to what his career decision will be.

Some speculation has suggested he could pass on his role of team boss to Allison and take on more of an advisory role, similar to that previously held by Niki Lauda.

But the Briton doesn't seem willing to accept the reins just yet.

“I think none of us would for a moment underestimate the importance of Toto to this team,” he told Channel 4.

“He brings and has brought stability over many years and a challenge for all of us to aim for those absolute highest possible standards.

“And that standard never, ever relents in where it’s set, but it’s done with humour, fairness, and with a degree of kindness which makes the team an extremely enjoyable place to work.

“Internally he is a fantastic leader, externally he protects us from the shark pit that F1 can be sometimes.

“He has been, I’d say, one of the most important pillars of the success of this team and I hope he is with us for many years to come.”

Given the strength of the relationship he and Wolff have built up since 2013, Hamilton, who himself is yet to commit to Mercedes beyond 2020, has previously suggested Toto's future may have a bearing on his own.

Although responding to Wolff's comments last week, the six-time world champion said his own future will not be decided by one person leaving.
