Nico Hulkenberg believes Renault must start matching the levels of development that would be expected from a manufacturer works team.

The Enstone-based outfit has been in a state of rebuilding since Renault bought the remains of Lotus at the end of 2015, and has gradually moved up from the back of the grid to finish P4 in last year's Constructors' Championship.

But, in an era when manufacturers are deemed to have an advantage in Formula 1 thanks to greater resources, the German does think it is time Renault pulled away from the midfield.

"We are aware competition is around and competition is tight. I find it interesting because every year people say 'yeah, the midfield is as tight as ever' but it is always tight,” Hulkenberg commented after Tuesday's test.

“It is always competitive. I’ve pretty much spent my entire career in the midfield so I know about it but, you know, we just need to stay on top of things.

“We need to make sure we come through with the development we expect from us, from a big factory team. For sure, Alfa [Romeo] looks strong, I think Haas looks strong, Racing Point, there are good teams out there that we're also up against.

“That we beat them last year doesn't mean we're naturally now in front of them. We need to work for it and make sure it happens like that,” he concluded.

A key difference between Renault and the other manufacturers is an unwillingness to spend huge amounts of money, something which, sadly, does largely dictate the competitive order in F1.

In fact, teams like Racing Point, Alfa Romeo and McLaren may well match the budget at managing director Cyril Abiteboul's disposal in 2019.

It was also noticeable too how engine gains were poor compared to their rivals last year, although Hulkenberg has confirmed improvements have been made for this year.

"The comparison to last year is not very fair [but I do] feel that with more drag on the car there is more power, so I feel we have made good progress in that area," he noted.
