Kevin Magnussen would leave Formula 1 if he thought championship success was never possible.
The Dane currently sits at the Haas team, having previously driven for McLaren and Renault with just a single podium result to his name, coming at his first race in 2014.
However, it is the promise of sweeping changes in 2021 aimed at elevating the midfield which is still motivating him to remain at the American outfit.
“If I knew that we’d only finish fourth and that I’d never win a world championship - if you told me ‘you won’t win ever’, then I’d go to do something else that I can be successful in,” he told GPFans.com.
“You can’t say ‘OK, I didn’t win so I’ll go home’, of course you need to try, but you need to understand there is a process and a road to success.
“None of us come here and work our asses off to finish fourth, but that’s the target this year."

Haas is facing a mammoth battle in 2019 up against the ever-improving Renault as well as other midfield teams like Alfa Romeo, Toro Rosso and Racing Point.
But, after finishing fifth last year, Magnussen's teammate Romain Grosjean is confident.
“I think we’ve got a first idea [of the pecking order], but it’s really difficult to read too much into it. I’d rather wait for the first few races to know where we are," the Frenchman was quoted by PlanetF1.
“It’s very sexy, it’s a beautiful car, it handles very well and the feeling in the car is better than it was last year.
“I think the team has done a really good job on its understanding of the new front wing and getting ready for the season to start. I’m really looking forward to driving the car on different kinds of circuits.”
