Red Bull boss Christian Horner has explained how Pierre Gasly exceeded the fuel flow limit during his Q1 lap in Baku.
The Frenchman was already a non-factor in qualifying having been given a pit-lane start for missing the weighbridge in practice.
However, it is common for drivers to set a lap just to be within the 107% rule and, in the case of Gasly, he would actually post the quickest time only to be later excluded again for the fuel flow breach.
“Basically the fuel flow sensor sometimes gets a little bit of oscillation," Horner said to RaceFans.
"He [Gasly] got a good tow on his lap from I think it was a [Racing Point] so that puts it into the limiter in top gear and the resonance was just such that it dipped in and out of the limit by 0.02 of a gram or something.
“So in terms of performance, nothing, but obviously zero tolerance from the FIA.

“[Afterwards] we changed the code which is why he got another penalty because it was a change in parc ferme so he got a penalty for that.”
After a weekend of penalties, Gasly enjoyed a strong race, moving upto P6 from the pit-lane, only for a driveshaft failure to result in an early bath.
