A report from RaceFans has raised the prospect of Mercedes boss Toto Wolff becoming Formula 1 CEO from 2021.

The Austrian made his way through the managerial ranks at the German manufacturer, initially joining as the commercial executive director and shareholder before becoming fully responsible for the F1 team following Paddy Lowe's departure in 2017.

Wolff has been with Mercedes throughout their five years of championship dominance, but changes at the very top and an expiring contract may offer the door for a fresh challenge.

CEO Deiter Zetsche is expected to depart this month with his replacement, Ola Kallenius, rumoured to be not as close to Wolff.

That is why RaceFans and their sources claim Liberty Media might be interested in attracting Toto to replace Chase Carey, who will leave his position at the end of 2020.

This after the executive extended his own stay by an additional year to oversee the ongoing talks regarding a new Concorde Agreement and F1 regulations.

Though neither party responded to requests for comment, it is a fascinating story to follow, particularly given how vocal Wolff has been during the 2021 negotiations.
