Valtteri Bottas believes it was "only a matter of time" before his results began to improve.

Last season, the Finn became the first Mercedes driver since 2012 to go a full season without winning a race as poor luck translated was followed by becoming the 'wingman' for Lewis Hamilton.

In just four races this year, however, Bottas has already won twice and currently sits atop the Drivers' Championship by a single point.

"Of course, there are many things in this sport that can affect results, sometimes you’re more lucky, sometimes a lot less so," he commented on Thursday ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix.

"But I honestly think that for me, while I’ve been able to improve year-by-year and really work with the team, work on my ability and focus on all the details, I think that if you work hard it’s only a matter of time for things to start to go right."

Bottas does also acknowledge his results wouldn't have been possible without the performance of Mercedes, with their flawless performance enough to stay ahead of Ferrari and Red Bull.

"Obviously, I’m pleased how the season has started compared to the recent ones, that’s very positive," he noted.

"But another thing is that, as a team, the level at which we’ve been able to perform in these first four races has been really impressive so it’s not only me, it’s also the team.

"It’s a good battle with Lewis, at the moment."
