Fernando Alonso has been tipped to make a comeback in Formula 1 next season.

As the sport prepares for the first Spanish Grand Prix since 2002 without its local hero, former Ferrari test driver Marc Gene raised the prospect of that absence being short-lived.

Recently, the double world champion announced he would be leaving the WEC after this year's Le Mans 24 Hours and currently, no racing activities beyond that race have been announced.

“I think he will return, but it’s not possible with Ferrari,” Gene told the AS newspaper.

“The fact that he did not renew with Toyota is a message that he wants to have freedom, but he will only return with a car that allows him to, if not win races then podiums.

“Right now there are three teams that allow this so we will see next year or end of this season.”

With Mercedes and Red Bull also unlikely to be welcoming Alonso any time soon, it may seem Gene's comments are more hope than reality.

However: “Fernando always has aces up his sleeve, we don’t even know he has them," he concluded.
