Pierre Gasly insists he still has the support of Red Bull bosses despite a poor start to 2019.

The Frenchman has finished sixth in two of the past three races but still struggles to match the pace of his teammate Max Verstappen.

While some continue to question just how long he'll be at the senior team if the gap doesn't close, Gasly himself plays down his initial struggles.

"Things are going well," he said ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix. "You always want things to be perfect from the first day, but usually that's impossible.

"Instead, you have to be patient as you work on improving every detail to get the most out of the car.

"I would like to be faster than I am at the moment, but things are getting better.”

A key part of improving, the 23-year-old noted, was learning from Verstappen.

“I’ve always known he’s one of the most talented guys, but I must say he is really good at extracting the maximum from the package at the moment,” Gasly told Crash.net.

“For me, it’s really good to be next to him at the moment, use his experience with the team and with the car to see a bit what he does to extract the maximum from the package that we have.

“He has been driving really well, really consistently, so it’s definitely a good benchmark to me.”

And as for his current relationship with the two men who will decide his future...

"I saw [team boss] Christian [Horner] when I was in the simulator last week, and I talk to Helmut [Marko] every week when I am not at the track," he revealed.

"They are very supportive and give me the best possible environment to develop myself as a driver and give my best results."
