Lance Stroll has the ability to be faster than teammate Sergio Perez with more experience, Racing Point tech chief Andrew Green claims.

The Canadian remains a pretty polarising driver on the grid, with many disapproving of his move to replace Esteban Ocon after his father bought the remanents of the former Force India team almost a year ago.

Yet he does show glimpses of his ability with three strong drives through the field to P9 this season, however, it is being overshadowed by an unwanted streak of 13 races without making it out of Q1 in qualifying which is hampering his race performance.

"There's no denying his Saturday afternoon performance, he'd say the same, he struggles on a Saturday afternoon but we have to put it in perspective," Green said via GPFans.com.

"He's in a very early part of his career and he's up against a very mature, experienced driver on the other side of the garage and he's learning a lot.

"In each race and in each session we give him targets and what to look for and how to improve and it's small margins every time – but he understands it."

There is no doubt in the Racing Point chief's mind though that the 20-year-old will find the secret to unlocking that potential and when he does, Sergio Perez had better watch out.

"He's an incredibly talented driver. We've seen that numerous times – and it's a case of just getting the experience," Green believes.

"And once he gets the experience and gets the confidence, we'll see him close the gap to Checo and potentially take a leap ahead of him.

"So, we've got every confidence he can do it – it just takes a bit of time."

After nine races this season, Stroll sits seven points behind the Mexican with Racing Point seventh in the Constructors' standings.
