Valtteri Bottas doesn't think a "higher being" is responsible for his run of bad luck at Mercedes.

The Finn currently finds himself in a perilous situation as the team decides whether to keep him or replace him with Esteban Ocon for 2020.

Over the past two seasons, however, poor luck at just the wrong time has cost him wins and stronger results, leading to a question over whether he thought there was a higher power working against him.

"No, I don’t think that way," he replied.

"For sure there have been races where I could have had slightly better luck on my side, but it has been sometimes against, sometimes it’s there for you.

"I think eventually things even out, who knows? We’ll find out, I try to do it all again and not think too much about the past. Lucky or not, I’m here and now only the future matters."

Bottas always faced a tough task up against Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes and his predecessor Nico Rosberg has often suggested the Finn needed to alter his approach to try and frustrate the Briton, as he did in 2016.

"For sure I’m not Nico Rosberg and as for mind games, I’m not a big, fan," he responded.

"I love big battles, straightforward ones, men versus men, or woman versus woman, or mixed… that’s what I like. When I win I want to win properly, go out on the track race hard but fair and see who’s the best."
