Mercedes boss Toto Wolff claims there wasn't space for Mick Schumacher to join their junior program.

After winning the European Formula 3 title last year, the son of seven-time F1 champion Michael had a decision to make as to where he would make his next career step.

Both of his father's former teams offered their interest before eventually Mick joined Ferrari's Academy in January and would test for the Scuderia earlier this year in Bahrain.

"Yes we had thought of it, but how could we?" Wolff told La Gazzetta dello Sport on the possibility of signing the 20-year-old.

"We are already struggling to find a seat in F1 for George Russell and [Esteban] Ocon."\

This year Schumacher has been competing in F2 with Prema and would score his first victory in Hungary after a largely subdued first season.

And while the Austrian knows Mick is now associated with their main rivals, he was still full of praise for Schumi Jr.

"Mick is a good boy, a character, he grew so much in F3 and F2, and I am sure that, when the time comes, he will do well also in F1," Wolff concluded.
