Sergio Perez sees Racing Point as on the right path towards ending 2019 as the fastest team in the midfield.

It has been a steady year for the Silverstone-based squad, who had a slow start as they overcome the fallout from last year's takeover but gradually have moved forward, introducing a raft of upgrades before and after the summer break.

Their impact has been noticeable, with Perez finishing in the points in four of the past five races, and the Mexican is keen for it to continue, particularly with his home race coming up this weekend.

“I think we’ve closed up the gap a bit,” he said after the Japanese GP. “We are in the mix with the Renaults and the McLarens.

“I think we’ve definitely shown good progress with good speed, so I’m looking forward to carrying that one on.

“The end of the season is coming, so every point counts now for the Constructors’ Championship.”

Currently, Racing Point sits seventh in the standings but only five points behind Toro Rosso and seemingly ending the year stronger.

Key to their final position will be Lance Stroll backing up his teammate, but the Canadian has been frustratingly just outside the points in recent races.

Even so, the improvements have been noticeable for him too.

“Yeah definitely. We’ve made improvements, we’re just more competitive now," he said.

“Before we would really rely on everything to go right and on top of that a little bit of luck to score points, now we can do it on pure pace and we’ve seen that in the last few weekends we can fight on pure pace for points.

“We still have weaknesses we’ve got to work on but it’s all looking positive.”
