Robert Kubica believes his return to Formula 1 would have continued into 2020 had last year’s Williams been stronger.
Last year saw the Polish driver making a highly-anticipated comeback to the grid, eight years after a rally crash had left him with severe arm injuries.
However, hopes of rekindling his performances with BMW and Renault quickly disappeared as Williams struggled at the back of the grid.
And though Kubica scored the team’s only point, inheriting 10th in Germany, he was also largely outclassed by teammate George Russell, who beat him 21-0 in qualifying.
“It is possible that if I had a better car last year, I would not be sitting here, I would be preparing to race in Australia,” he was quoted as telling Poland’s Gosc Radio Zet.
“At Williams, I found a group of people who know what they are doing, but there were others who could have done better work.”

In Singapore last September, Kubica confirmed he would be leaving Williams and has found new roles as reserve driver at Alfa Romeo and a DTM drive with BMW for 2020.
And while obviously disappointed, the 35-year-old acknowledges the opportunity he got.
“I think I’m lucky anyway because many of my colleagues with great talent never got to Formula 1,” he concluded.
