Charles Leclerc says he feels “still far away” from becoming a champion in Formula 1.
The Monegasque has quickly emerged into one of the young stars for the future in his two years on the grid and is now positioned to lead Ferrari into the future following the exit of Sebastian Vettel at the end of 2020.
However, while such a role would usually demand Leclerc fight for the championship, he doesn’t think he nor the team is ready.
“If I think about becoming world champion? I don’t know what to expect, I’ve never been one,” he kiddingly told Sky Italia, “but I have to work, there’s still a long way to go.
“I’m happy with the growth I’ve had so far but there’s still so much to do. I hope to succeed someday, but I’m still far away.”

Like everyone, Leclerc is also impatiently awaiting the start of the 2020 season, which has been delayed by the coronavirus.
And though the 22-year-old has been filling his time by becoming F1’s newest Twitch star, he admits he also wants a return to the day job.
“I go to sleep and I wake up with only one idea in my head: to drive,” he said. “I miss it so much, I’m training more than ever to be ready when we start again.”
