Leclerc sure Ferrari can catch Mercedes as Spa upgrade expected

Charles Leclerc does believe Ferrari can still close the performance gap to Mercedes this season.

The Scuderia has been left trailing in 2019, as a lack of downforce on the SF90H has seen the German manufacturer dominate with Red Bull also pulling ahead.

Leclerc has still had a very solid first season in red though, claiming five podiums and narrowly missing out on victory twice, and he holds on to the belief that Ferrari can turn their situation around.

“It is a very big challenge because since the beginning of the year it’s not like they have been quick on one or two races, they have been consistently very, very quick so it has been a very big challenge for us,” the Monegasque said.

“But with Ferrari nothing is impossible, we are working very hard and we will be pushing until the end and I am pretty sure that we will catch them.”

The next two races at Spa and Monza will almost certainly see Ferrari take the fight to Mercedes as the long straights suit the low drag characteristics of their car

And reports from close to the team suggest the new ‘Spec 3’ power unit will also be introduced in Belgium and with it, an improvement of 20 horsepower compared to the current engine, which is already believed to be the best on the grid.
