Leclerc tempers expectations despite P4 in British GP qualifying

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will “wait and see” what happens next after claiming P4 in British Grand Prix qualifying on Friday.

The Monegasque capitalised on Red Bull’s Sergio Perez having his last lap time deleted for track limits in Q3 and could be in a good position to at least pick up the pieces from any drama ahead.

“I’m very happy,” said Leclerc. “It was a tricky qualifying. With so little preparation going into qualifying, it makes things a bit trickier. But we did a good job, maximised the potential of the car.

“I was quite confident [with the car], especially in Q1. In Q2, I wasn’t at the level I wanted to be. Then in Q3, I regained the confidence, and the pace a little bit in the car, so I’m happy with how it went.

On a weekend Ferrari commemorate 70 years since their first F1 win at Silverstone in 1951, Leclerc himself returns to the track where he took his last podium almost 12 months ago.

Last time out in Austria, the race pace of the SF21 was among the best on the grid, although fears over high front tyre wear mean the Scuderia isn’t sure if the British circuit will favour them or not.

Add in the bonus of F1’s first-ever Sprint Qualifying on Saturday, and Charles is readying to sit back for the ride.

“Yeah, it’s an exciting weekend. Tomorrow we have a sprint race, don’t really know how to go into that sprint. We will just try to do the best race possible,” he assessed.

“Let’s wait and see. I don’t like to speak too quickly. Let’s see how it goes tomorrow. We are all going into an unknown.

“We have got FP2 to try and prepare the sprint race as well as we can – and then let’s see what can we do.”
