Marquez calls for teams to have an ‘open mind’ over riders’ contracts for 2021

With massive uncertainty over the starting date of the 2020 MotoGP season, Marc Marquez expressed his concern about riders’ contracts.

The reigning champion recently re-signed to race for the factory Honda team for the next four seasons and was joined in 2020 by his younger brother Alex.

However, the younger Marquez signed only a one year contract with an option for extending if the results are good enough for him to stay at the team.

And Marc believes teams need to be smart about how they handle those who are without a ride for 2021.

“The situation is difficult,” he admitted. “I have already renewed for four years with Honda.

“There are, however, many who have not yet signed a contract, who must prove they deserve a place in MotoGP, in Moto2, in Moto3, and among those is my brother. I think teams need to have tact or a slightly more open mind.”

Having seen financial solutions already put in place to cope with the fallout from coronavirus, Marquez then suggesting adopting a similar approach to the riders.

“The development of motorcycles has been frozen from 2020 to 2021, and I think it is a good thing because the budgets of the team will also be affected by this pandemic,” the Spaniard continued.

“Why not do something similar with rider contracts? They could freeze them as if this year hadn’t happened. But these are things beyond my control.”

Potential conflicts are already emerging should a cancelled 2020 MotoGP season happen.

Most notably, Petronas SRT boss Razlan Razali has claimed he will fight to keep Fabio Quartararo at his team for 2021, this despite the French superstar already being signed to replace Valentino Rossi at Yamaha next year.
