Max Verstappen still sees a “good chance” to win the Italian Grand Prix from seventh on the grid.
The world champion was second fastest in qualifying on Saturday, missing out on pole by almost 0.15s to Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
But a five-place grid penalty for a new ICE means Verstappen faces another charge through the pack at Monza in the race.
“With what I’ve seen from the long runs, it looks good from our side,” the Red Bull driver said on his victory hopes.

“I just need to have a clean Lap 1, clear the cars in between us quite quickly, and I think we still have a good chance.”
Though tyre wear has been low all weekend, Verstappen believes he can benefit from the team opting for more of a race setup on his car.
“We chose a downforce level a bit higher compared to some other cars, but it felt alright,” he confirmed. “It should normally be better for tyre deg, and hopefully we can show that tomorrow.
“Of course around here, qualifying to race can always feel a bit different,” he added. “My race runs, they felt really good, so very happy with that pace. I’m actually really looking forward to the race tomorrow.”
As for teammate Sergio Perez, he lines up 13th after grid penalties of his own and may face a battle with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, starting five places behind in 18th.
Asked about the challenge the Scuderia will pose, the Mexican said: “We knew certainly they were going to be very fast around here. It’s not much of a surprise.
“I think in the race they will also be strong, so they will be hard to beat – especially where we’re going to be starting.
“But I think in the race it’s a lot closer and hopefully we are able to have a good management of our strategy and be in the mix tomorrow.”
