McLaren CEO tips Alonso to do F1/ Indy 500 double in 2021

McLaren CEO Zak Brown has backed Fernando Alonso to compete in both Formula 1 and the Indianapolis 500 in 2021.

Usually, it would be impossible for a driver to race a full season of F1 and take on the Brickyard as the latter normally takes place on the same weekend as the Monaco Grand Prix.

Next year, however, this isn’t the case and if the Spaniard doesn’t wrap up the Triple Crown this year, Brown thinks he has the skill to combine a potential Renault drive with a fourth go at Indy.

“There’s a chance he’ll be driving Formula 1 in 2021 and then he can combine it with the Indy 500. With his experience in that class it’s possible for him to change over in a week,” he said speaking with IndyStar.

“For any other Formula 1 driver, such a switch would be quite difficult because you wouldn’t have experience on an oval. Alonso has and seen how fast he was the first time, you know he can participate.”

Whether or not Renault would accept Fernando doing that is another question, and there is of course the dates of practice and qualifying to consider.

For now, all eyes will be on the 38-year-old’s third Indianapolis attempt in August, competing for the Arrow McLaren SP team.
