McLaren CEO Zak Brown would “very much welcome” Ferrari being part of IndyCar in any capacity from 2022.
As a result of the new $145m budget cap coming in Formula 1 from next year, the Italian team has confirmed it is open to expanding their motorsport activities to prevent job losses, with IndyCar and WEC the two categories most mentioned.
Series owner Roger Penske and F1 team boss Mattia Binotto have also revealed talks have been held with Ferrari over joining Honda and Chevrolet as the third manufacturer on the grid.
McLaren has already made the hop back across the pond, initially with Fernando Alonso at Indianapolis in 2017 and 2019 before partnering with Schmidt Peterson Motorsport full-time from this year.
And ahead of Sunday’s Indy 500, Brown is hopeful to see the famous F1 rivalry reignited in a new environment.
“Absolutely. I think it would be great if Ferrari joined IndyCar,” he told The Race.
“I think it would be great for their brand. I think it would be great for IndyCar, no doubt bringing some additional excitement and intrigue.
“Whether they come as a team or as an engine manufacturer or both, we very much welcome Ferrari’s participation.”
Ferrari has previously flirted with IndyCar back in 1986, creating the 637 (pictured below), but later pulled the plug on the project.
