Mercedes has fallen foul of Formula 1’s new front wing regulations with their update for the Chinese Grand Prix.

Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reports a cut-out at the top of the endplate on the new concept doesn’t adhere to the rule that all main elements of the front wing must not be visible when viewed from the side.

While deemed illegal, it is believed Mercedes still ran the design in practice on Friday but will have to either adapt or switch back to an old spec in time for qualifying on Saturday.

According to AMuS, Red Bull and Williams have also had similar ideas prohibited by the FIA.

The new simpler front wings introduced for 2019 were designed to reduce the ‘outwash’ effect which is blamed for causing much of the turbulent air that makes it tough for another car to follow.

Ferrari and Alfa Romeo have been seen to lead the way in trying to recreate the same effect with a concept that sees the outer part of the upper elements swoop back thus making them in compliance with the new regulation.

Other teams, perhaps including Red Bull and Mercedes are expected to introduce their own interpretations as soon as next month’s Spanish Grand Prix.
