Mitch Evans wins a thrilling Mexico E-Prix after a scintillating drive from the Jaguar Racing driver.
The Kiwi driver managed to pass Andre Lotterer off the line in Turn 1. Evans forced Lotterer wide after locking up, but that pushed the Porsche driver out wide, and the German fell to fourth place.
From then on, Evans drove away out front. He managed to pull a five-second advanatage over the drivers behind, which enabled him to dictate his race.
Behind Evans, it was once again pure chaos in Formula E. Antonio Felix Da Costa came home in second after starting the race in ninth, with Sebastien Buemi avoiding the carnage to finish in third place.
At the start of the race, Evans got passed Lotterer at Turn 1, but that also allowed Nyck De Vries to move into second place, and Buemi also passed the Porsche driver to move into third.
The race was naturalised after three laps as Nico Muller tried to pass Nyck De Vries who was starting to fall down the order, but the Dragon Racing driver got it wrong at Turn 1 and drove straight into the wall.
Once the safety car came in. Sam Bird used his first Attack Mode to pass Andre Lotterer for fourth place. Lotterer then immediately lost out to Robin Frijns and Nyck De Vries.
Then the race went from bad to worse for Lotterer, as he clipped De Vries on the exit of Turn 13 in the stadium section which broke his front wing and caused him to retire from the race.
Bird then got into a fantastic scrap with Buemi for second place, and the Brit eventually passed the Swiss driver with the use of his second Attack Mode.
Further down the order, Da Costa was starting to make his charge up the field and was trying to pass De Vries for fifth place. On the main straight, both Da Costa and De Vries used their Fanboost, but De Vries locked up and couldn’t slow down and wiped out Robin Frijns who was in fourth and fighting Buemi.
That promoted the Techeetah duo to fourth and fifth as they started to hunt down Sebastien Buemi. However, they didn’t make it easy for themselves as the Chinese team told Da Costa to let Jean-Eric Vergne through, but then a lap later Da Costa passed Vergne. Therefore, they had lost two seconds to Buemi in third.
However, Da Costa was able to hunt down Buemi and pass him and then set his sights on Bird. Within two laps Da Costa was right behind Bird, and at Turn 3, Bird ran wide and hit the wall, which forced the Brit to retire from the race with four laps to go.
On the final lap, Alexander Sims who had moved up to the sixth place, was fighting former championship leader Stoffel Vandoorne. However, Vandoorne made the same mistake as Bird and ran wide at Turn 3 and threw away fifth position.
Therefore, Vergne was able to come home in fourth place, and Sims came home fifth place. Lucas Di Grassi had a great race as he came from 15th place to score points.
Oliver Rowland came home in seventh for Nissan with Edoardo Mortara in eighth. James Calado ended up in ninth and secured his first points of the campaign.
Pascal Wehrelin rounded out the top ten for Mahindra who started last and had to take a drive-through penalty due to changing his gearbox before shakedown on Friday.
