Formula E’s fifth visit to Mexico will utilise a drastically different circuit configuration at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, after Formula E confirmed a layout change for this year’s Mexico City E-Prix
The circuit has been extended to 2.606km via the addition of an extended loop starting at turn three and ending at turn seven where the circuit rejoins the back straight.
This means the circuit now has a hairpin at turn five, and an extended flat-out section leading from the hairpin to turn 8, creating two strong overtaking opportunities on a circuit which has infamously been difficult for cars to pass each other over the years.
The Foro Sol stadium section (turns nine through fourteen) remains unaltered, however, the chicane in the middle of the legendary Peraltada corner, where last year a red flag was caused when Nelson Piquet Jnr.’s Jaguar launched over the back of Jean-Eric Vergne’s Techeetah, has now been removed.
This means that the field won’t have to negotiate any chicanes at all on the lap, hopefully lowering the likelihood of any huge race-suspending accidents.
The Mexico City E-Prix takes place on February 15th.
