Juan Pablo Montoya believes he can add the Le Mans 24 Hours to his name and complete motorsport’s Triple Crown.
The trifecta, consisting of Le Mans, the Indianapolis 500 and Monaco Grand Prix has been the holy grail that Fernando Alonso has been targeting in recent years, with only a win at the Brickyard eluding him.
Montoya though, after two Indy 500 wins and his 2003 victory in Monte Carlo, could beat the Spaniard in matching the feat only previously achieved by Graham Hill.
And with the new Hypercar regulations coming next year, the Colombian believes Team Penske, with whom he races in IMSA, may well consider a shot at helping him do it.
“I think with the hybrids now, with the new package I think if we can get a good opportunity to run there it’s going to be a lot of fun,” he told Motorsport.com last week before competing in the Le Mans 24 Hours Virtual.

“That would be exciting to go to Le Mans and have a shot of winning overall. And believe me, if that would be the case then the preparation would be different [compared to Virtual Le Mans].
“Would I like to win it [the Triple Crown]? Yes, but I don’t see it as ‘oh, I really want to win it because Fernando wants to do it as well’.
“I think it would be nice to try to do it because the [Le Mans] 24 is such a cool event and it would be one of those big races that you take part in.”
Montoya has previously competed at the world’s biggest endurance race in 2018, finishing seventh overall in a United Autosports LMP2 entry.
And in the race to win the Triple Crown, Alonso will have the chance to do so first, with this year’s Indianapolis 500 set to take place in August.
