Norris wants rain after ‘better than expected’ pace in British GP practice

Lando Norris is hoping rain can further mix up the order after a strong performance in practice for the British Grand Prix.

The home favourite surprised everyone at Silverstone by putting his McLaren into third place in FP2, less than two-tenths off the pace set by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz.

However, Norris admitted the result may have been slightly flattering although hoped that wasn’t the case.

“A decent day, very tricky in the windy conditions we have here,” he commented.

“It’s strong gusts at high speed, so the car is difficult to drive, changing every lap, it’s inconsistent but it’s the same for everyone.

“From our side, I think the car’s performing in a reasonable area, a little bit better than maybe we were expecting, so hopefully that can continue into tomorrow.

“Whether that’s good or not, or whether it’s because we’ve turned the engine up more than the others we don’t know.

“We can make a couple of changes and small improvements in a few areas and continue the pace we had today into tomorrow.”

The first session was literally a damp squib at Silverstone as a heavy downpour around certain parts of the circuit meant only 10 cars set a lap time.

Explaining why teams were reluctant to run, Norris said: “We did hardly any running because we were saving the tyres for tomorrow.

“We think it’s going to be a higher chance of it being rainy, or it being wet, for qualifying.

“I don’t know if it’s like today, hopefully that’s perfect because it’s always tricky in the rain.

“But I love the circuit, things are going well and hopefully, that continues whether it’s dry or wet.”
