Fernando Alonso will enter the 2020 Dakar Rally it was officially confirmed by Toyota on Thursday.

The Spaniard has been preparing for a bid at the cross country event with a number of tests and recently competed in his first official event in Morocco.

Though Alonso ended the event only 26th, he was running inside the top 10 before his rally was disrupted by crashing into a ditch and would finish inside the top 10 in three of the five stages.

The 38-year-old has been partnered throughout with five-time Dakar winner on two wheels, Marc Coma, and his fellow countryman will be Fernando’s co-driver for the event taking place in Saudi Arabia next January.

Alonso is part of a four-man driver attack on Dakar by Toyota with Nasser Al-Attiyah, Giniel de Villiers and Bernhard ten Brinke at the wheel of the other three Hilux 4×4’s, operated by the Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa team.

Ahead of the Rally, Alonso will complete another two-day test in Spain on Friday and Saturday and another run in Abu Dhabi is being considered for November.
