Perez faces pressure as Red Bull explores alternative options

Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko has confirmed that Sergio Perez will remain on the team for the remainder of the 2024 season, dispelling rumors of a potential early termination.

However, Marko hinted that Perez’s future beyond 2024 is uncertain, suggesting that his current performance may not be sufficient to secure a seat for the upcoming season.

Marko expressed concern over Red Bull’s significant drop to third place in the Constructors’ Championship, attributing it in part to Perez’s underperformance. He emphasized the financial implications of this decline, highlighting the substantial difference in prize money between first and third place.

“The difference between first and third place is 17 million euros. That is a serious financial hit, especially for the employees, as their bonus is based on the constructors’ championship.” Marko stated.

Perez has recently voiced frustration with his car’s performance, claiming that it is not up to the same standard as Verstappen’s. Marko acknowledged these concerns and confirmed that Red Bull is investigating the issue, even providing Perez with a new chassis in an attempt to address his complaints.

“We have investigated everything because he said there are problems with the brakes and the chassis. I think he is even getting a new chassis now to calm him down.” Perez said.

With Perez’s future uncertain, Red Bull has turned its attention to younger drivers, including Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar. Lawson has been promoted to the AlphaTauri team to assess his potential for a future promotion to the main team, while Hadjar is being considered as a potential replacement for Perez.

Marko emphasized the importance of the upcoming Abu Dhabi test, where Hadjar will have the opportunity to showcase his abilities and potentially secure a seat for the 2025 season.

Marko said, “The testing in Abu Dhabi will be crucial for his (Hadjar’s) future. A number of drivers will be there as well who could be considered for next year.”

When asked if Hadjar, 20, is ready for Formula 1, Marko answered: “Yes, absolutely. He was faster than Franco Colapinto in all the junior categories.”
