Sergio Perez says he needs a project that continues to motivate him after claiming Racing Point haven’t made the gains expected in 2019.
The Mexican has often spoken highly of the Silverstone-based squad and their ambitions following last year’s takeover by Canadian businessman Lawrence Stroll.
However, as work continues to rebuild Racing Point since the change in ownership, ahead of his home race, Perez admits the level of performance isn’t what he expected at this point of the year.
“It’s not ideal, you know. I wish by now we had more points, we were fighting for better positions, and we’ve improved more,” he told Motorsport.com.
“The disappointing bit comes with the lack of improvement throughout the year. I think that is something we can consider, but all the rest, I think, we kind of expected.

“We knew that this year it is a transition year, but it hurts, you know. It is a long year to have that transition,’ Perez added.
“But we see the light out of the tunnel. I think there are plenty of reasons to be positive for the future. I still hope that we finish with the fourth fastest car on the grid.”
Currently, Racing Point sits seventh in the Constructors’ standings and have made some ground in the midfield thanks to a raft of upgrades before and after the summer break.
But with the team not where he wants it, Perez, who recently signed a new three-year deal, is lacking belief.
“I need motivation,” he said. “I want encouragement to come here, and leave the weekend knowing that I’ve done the best, and the team has done their best.
“The last three years I’ve been fighting for best of the rest so I have to keep that motivation, I have to have a project that motivates me to keep going on.”
Of course, for a team like Racing Point, all eyes are on 2021 and the Mexican has high aspirations.
“Definitely podiums are a target, you know,” he claimed.
“Definitely to take the next step. There is a massive rule change for 2021, there are a lot of things going on behind the scenes, so a lot of work going on. So I see no reason why we cannot be successful.”
