Perez teases news ‘pretty soon’ on F1 future amid Williams links

Sergio Perez says he should have news on his Formula 1 future “pretty soon” as the season draws to a close.

In the past week, rumours have linked the Mexican to Williams and the seat currently held by George Russell, with his financial backing proving attractive to the new owners Dorliton Capital.

Also, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko included Perez as a potential alternative if the team decided to replace Alex Albon for 2021.

Asked for an update ahead of the Portuguese Grand Prix this weekend though, Checo continued to keep his cards close to his chest.

“I haven’t signed anything,” said Perez via Crash.net.

“At the moment there’s not a lot that I have to report or say. The season is coming to an end so it’s getting close and I should be in a position to say something pretty soon I think.

“But up to now, I don’t think there’s a lot of point in giving away anything because I also want to keep my negotiations private,” he added.

“I think we’ve got to be respectful of all the teams that we’re talking to and so there’s no point to discuss anything at the moment.”

Pushed to reveal exactly who he was talking to, Perez replied: “There are not many teams out there! Actually very few.

“It’s not like a number, but there are very few teams out there that have a good project that is something that really puts me into their project, and I’m willing to be in that project.

“I’m looking to stay in Formula 1, I’m not interested at the moment in anything else,” he added. “If I don’t find anything here, I haven’t thought about it. I’m pretty convinced I will continue.

“I’m 30 years old, I’m in the prime of my career, so it’s hard for me to think of doing something else when I still feel my best years are ahead of me, so that’s the ultimate target.”
