Racing Point owner Stroll linked to Aston Martin stake, F1 team rebrand

Racing Point could be renamed as Aston Martin in the future amid speculation owner Lawrence Stroll is about to buy a stake in the British brand.

On Thursday, RaceFans in conjunction with AutoCar reported that the Canadian billionaire is interested in Aston Martin following a rough period that has seen its share price drop to almost a quarter of the original asking price on the London FTSE, as well as report a loss of £80m for the first six months of 2019.

Shares rose sharply following the news of Stroll’s investment and in F1 terms, that means the so-called pink panthers, thanks to three years of BWT sponsorship, could be adorned in British Racing Green under the Aston name.

Making that prospect more likely is the connection already between the company and Racing Point’s engine supplier Mercedes and the fact Aston also has an Engineering Centre at Silverstone, the same location as the team’s factory.

The tricky part comes from Aston Martin’s relationship with Red Bull as a title sponsor of the F1 team and a technical tie-up, which led to the creation of the Valkyrie, a car expected to be entered under the new WEC hypercar regulations coming next year.

At the time of writing, no confirmation of the reports has come through from either side.
