Racing Point look to have taken plenty of cues from Mercedes as their new RP02 hit the track in Barcelona on Wednesday.

After launching their new pinkier livery on last year’s car in Austria earlier this week, their 2020 design hadn’t been seen before Sergio Perez turned his first laps at the start of winter testing.

And when he did, the hallmarks of the 2019 Mercedes were everywhere from the front nose to the sidepods on the Racing Point.

The Silverstone-based squad heads into this year confident of making progress in the midfield after a difficult season saw them drop to seventh in the Constructors’ standings.

An uncompromised winter will help, with this the first car fully designed under the ownership of Lawrence Stroll, and Perez is setting his goals high.

“I really hope that this will be my best-ever season in Formula 1, that I beat all the other years in terms of results. That will be the target for the season,” he said at Monday’s launch.

“I think being best of the rest will be very tough. The competition out there will be very big, but I’m sure that we can fight for that. I think we had a very strong second half of the season so I see no reason why we can’t start strong in Melbourne this year.

“It should be a good improvement for us. Obviously it’s all related to what others are able to do, but we are confident at the moment and we are in a much better place than we ever were for the start of the season, so I’m looking forward to it.”
