Raikkonen: Alfa has ‘work to do’ as engine issue disrupts Friday

Kimi Raikkonen admits Alfa Romeo has “work to do” to challenge the upper midfield after a problematic Friday at Silverstone.

The ‘Iceman’ caused a red flag in the morning session after an engine issue left him stranded at Luffield, but would recover some lost time to claim 13th in the afternoon.

On the smoky failure, Raikkonen explained investigations were still ongoing into what exactly went wrong.

“I don’t know, something related to the power unit somewhere,” he said to Formula1.com.

“I don’t think any of us know. They swapped out to a different engine and tomorrow will take the old engine and look.

“Maybe it can be run again, maybe not.”

Alfa Romeo arrived at the British Grand Prix after a first double points finish of the season in Austria and with a number of new parts to maintain the momentum.

However, after the setbacks, Raikkonen accepts a tricky weekend likely lies in store to challenge the likes of McLaren.

“I think the morning made it quite difficult,” the 39-year-old conceded. “It is not an easy place anyhow.

“For sure we have quite a bit of work to do but we have time to look over the data and try to make the car faster.

“For sure there are some issues we need to fix but the last runs felt a bit better so we’ll see.”
