Kimi Raikkonen will start from the pit-lane after Alfa Romeo took his car out of parc ferme following his Q3 crash at the Italian GP.

For the second time in two days, the 2007 world champion lost the rear through the Parabolica and slid helplessly into the barrier causing a red flag period.

Already needing a new gearbox, the decision was then taken to fit a new Ferrari engine in the back with other changes likely to optimise his chances of recovery.

“I don’t think it’s anything to do with the track,” Raikkonen said of his crashes. “I made a mistake and I paid a price for it. That’s how it should be.

“It’s far from ideal for tomorrow, but we’ll see.”

Meanwhile, Sergio Perez will line up 19th on the grid at Monza after Racing Point fitted his car with a fresh Mercedes unit following an issue during Q1.

That means, Max Verstappen, Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris, all of whom entered the weekend with engine penalties gain two positions.
