Kimi Raikkonen does believe Formula 1 could one day host a Finnish Grand Prix if the funding could be found.
His comments come as MotoGP prepares for their first event in the country in 2020, with riders recently testing the new KymiRing located around 100km from the capital.
However, while the venue has been constructed to the Grade 1 standard necessary for F1 races, Raikkonen sees a street race as an alternative.
“I have seen videos of the bikes going around there [KymiRing],” the 2007 world champion said via Crash.net.
“I always said, many years ago, I’m sure we could race in the middle of Helsinki if somebody puts the money down and does it. That’s the only issue.
“I don’t know if we have a track that is homologated for F1 yet but it’s for the bikes for sure, so it must be safe in many areas.
“For sure it’s possible, it’s just a matter of somebody taking care of the cost. If that happens it’s great.”
Finland has never hosted a world championship F1 race despite producing more drivers as a percentage of the population than any other country.
Previous feasibility studies have been conducted for a Grand Prix but no concrete plans have been proposed.
