Red Bull remain positive about performance despite tricky Thursday

Red Bull remain confident in the progress of the RB16 despite a tricky day dealing with the weather in Barcelona on Thursday.

Overnight rain saw the first wet running of pre-season in the first hours of the morning, though the Anglo-Austrian outfit opted not to get some experience on the intermediates, instead, waiting for the track to dry.

The reason for that was later revealed as some new upgrades were spotted around the bargeboard area as Red Bull switched to their Melbourne-spec package.

And despite the limited running, and a trip into the gravel at Turn 5, Max Verstappen was still satisfied by what he felt.

“It was a bit of a shame in the morning with the weather but its the same for everyone but we were able to test all our things and get an understanding of the car,” the Dutchman, who finished sixth overall on the day, was quoted by FormulaSpy.

“I think, so far, we are pretty happy about it. Every day we are improving and learning more about the car and whats exactly what we want to do.

“I think at the end of the day still we tried everything we wanted to and we got all the information we wanted to.

“Of course, you always want to do more laps but the track was not helping in the morning otherwise I could have done probably 40 – 50 laps.

“I had my own little spin cause I touched the damp patch on the track which didn’t help with the number of laps but overall I think it’s still all good.”

After the dampness in the morning, Alex Albon had to deal with the wind that blew across Montmelo in the afternoon and was negatively impacting the performance of the cars.

“It is hard to say really, it is really windy here so when you’re talking about this kind of wind it is quite hard to judge,” he said of the Red Bull’s balance.

“But it is feeling good, I think in general the cars feeling good in all conditions, the positive thing is that we know the direction that we are happy with.

“Loads of things we are working on during the end of last year and coming through to this year, we seem to have got the car in the right direction. So it is a good base especially coming into the start of the year.

“Of course upgrades will be coming through, through the year especially during the early phase of it. So everything is quite positive.”
