Russell targets British GP win but Mercedes coy on chances

George Russell is going all out to make sure his first podium at the British Grand Prix will “be on the top step”.

The King’s Lynn native has a best finish of 12th in four previous Formula 1 races at Silverstone but finally heads to a home race with a car capable of potentially a top three finish.

Even so, while Russell wouldn’t be disappointed to take any trophy home on Sunday, his eyes are solely fixed on victory.

“It would mean a huge amount. But I want my first podium at Silverstone to be on the top step, so that’s what I am absolutely going for,” he told the Beyond the Grid podcast.

“Not that I’d back off on the last lap if I’m second or third to not be on the podium, but Silverstone has such a fond place in my heart.

“It’s where I won my first-ever race, it’s where I did my first-ever race as well, won it, first race! It’s where I did my first ever test in a Formula 1 car.

“And just being my home race, the support is huge, so I can’t wait to get there, and I’ll be giving it absolutely everything I’ve got.”

The British GP has certainly been Mercedes territory in recent years, with the team winning the race in eight of the previous nine years.

And despite their difficulties so far in 2022, a strong race in Montreal and an upgrade for this weekend are raising expectations.

“Canada was our fifth podium of the season, and we were happy to collect solid points,” said team boss Toto Wolff in his pre-race preview.

“While we can be pleased with the flashes of speed that the W13 showed, there’s still a mountain to climb. A lot of work is needed to get to the front, but we have a clearer direction now.

“We’re focused on finding more and more performance as the season progresses.

“Silverstone is next, and it’s always a highlight of the year. The fans are so passionate and knowledgeable. It’s also our local event, with Brackley and Brixworth close by.

“We know the top two teams have a considerable advantage,” he added. “Our challenge is to close that gap.

“Silverstone has been good to us in the past; we have some improvements coming, it’s a smoother track. We’re aiming to make another step forward.

“I think if we are able to run the car low, then we can be competitive,” he told Sky Sports. “But you know, after Barcelona, we were cheering that we’re back in a Championship fight and here we go. So let’s see.”
