Carlos Sainz believes the pending retirement of Fernando Alonso is a “big loss” for Formula 1 and the sport must listen to his reasons why.
The double world champion will bring to an end a 17-year stint on the grid which has seen win two world titles and still sees him considered as one of the most talented drivers behind the wheel.
Though an ambition to race in other categories is one reason, that desire has been driven by a tough past few years which have seen him struggling in a poor McLaren with the realisation that under the current rules and political climate, the chances of a recovery are slim.
“To not have one of the best drivers or the best drivers in motorsport at the moment in the grid is a big loss,” Sainz stated in Thursday’s press conference in Mexico.
“So I think it is something for F1 and everyone to consider why one of the best drivers is leaving and why we cannot have a bit more competitive grid where many drivers can fight for wins or for podiums. I think it’s a thing to consider and something to think about for the future.”
Max Verstappen echoed the Spaniard’s comments believing Alonso has one simple goal in mind.
“I think Fernando is a winner and he wants to win races,” he said. “He didn’t see that happening in the near future and of course he has tried already for a few years.
“I can understand why he leaves. Probably some new advantage where he probably can win again I think, that will motivate him very much and we’ll see in the future whether he comes back or not.”

Sainz will be the man who replaces his countryman, hero and mentor at McLaren next year and Autosport is reporting the 23-year-old is seeking permission to drive with his new team at the post-Abu Dhabi tyre test.
“It’s a good opportunity to try this year’s car, obviously not next year’s, but I’m focusing on these three races,” he commented. “I think my management are looking into if it’s possible or not.
“At the moment it’s not decided, or nothing has been clarified.”
