Sauber & Alfa Romeo announce one-year partnership extension

Alfa Romeo will continue their partnership with Sauber into 2021, it was confirmed on Thursday.

The Italian brand returned as a sponsor back in 2018 before assuming the naming rights of the Swiss-based team a year later, as part of closer ties with Fiat Chrysler.

Since then, results haven’t been too remarkable, with the team finishing eighth in the Constructors’ standings last year and is currently in that same position this season.

But in the statement confirming their continued partnership, Alfa team boss Fred Vasseur is confident the best is yet to come.

“The extension of our relationship with Alfa Romeo is a true statement of intent from both parties,” he commented.

“In Sauber, Alfa Romeo found a committed, performance-driven partner to which they could entrust their brand: we are honoured to carry the heritage and past success of Alfa Romeo in our name.

“Both parties always intended for this relationship to bear fruit in the long term: we have laid some solid foundations in the last three season and we aim to reap the rewards of this work in 2021 and beyond.”

The news comes ahead of the third and final race in Italy this weekend, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

And Alfa is using the return of Imola to celebrate their 110th anniversary with a tweaked livery to include the red white and green of the Italian flag.

It may also provide the opportunity for the team to confirm their 2021 driver line-up, with Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi now expected to be retained, with Mick Schumacher set to join Haas.
