Racing Point has confirmed they are monitoring the progress of Mick Schumacher for a possible future Formula 1 seat.
The 20-year-old German made plenty of headlines in late-2018 and early-2019 after winning the European F3 title, earning him a promotion to F2 with Prema for this year.
Not only that, but Schumacher also joined the Ferrari Academy, testing for the Scuderia in April, and has been linked to an Alfa Romeo drive in 2021.
Now it appears the Swiss team could have some competition for his signature.
“We have quite a few drivers in mind,” Racing Point boss Otmar Szafnauer told Speed Week.
“We look at how they beat each other in the junior series. We even wrote an analysis program in which we record all the results. While that does not allow a perfect judgment, it’s a guide.
“Everyone in Formula 1 is watching attentively what Mick Schumacher is doing, but there are some pretty good guys. We also had Nicholas Latifi in our car.”

The reason why no team is ready to immediately take the risk on Schumacher, however, has been an inconsistent first year in F2, leaving him 12th in the championship.
“There have been a lot of ups and downs this season and it’s for this reason speculation about Mick moving to F1 has stopped,” former F1 driver JJ Lehto told Italy’s MotoriOnline.
“Mick needs a very good season in F2 to rekindle the enthusiasm from other teams.
“The kid has talent but he needs to improve a lot before moving to F1. Obviously the name helps but you need to win titles if you want to go and compete in Formula 1.”
