The IndyCar Series has announced the cancellation of the Richmond and Toronto races, with the Road America round being turned into a double-header.

IndyCar announced a provisional calendar in April, but local restrictions have led to the Richmond and Toronto rounds being called off.

There were hopes that the Toronto race could be rescheduled following the news that the city was banning events with more than 250 spectators until September 1, but it was confirmed this week that the race will not take place.

The series plans to kick off on June 6 at the Texas Motor Speedway, with a month wait until round two at the Indianapolis Road Course on July 4.

The Indy 500 is scheduled to run on August 23, with the season finale set to take place at St Petersburg on October 25.

“Our teams and athletes are ready to get back on track and will deliver world-class action at Texas Motor Speedway and the Racing Capital of the World,” said Penske Entertainment CEO Mark Miles.

“We appreciate the opportunity to begin our season during these unprecedented times, and I’m confident we’ll put on a great show.”

NASCAR got back underway last weekend at Darlington, before hosting the Toyota 500 at the same circuit on Wednesday.
