Reports from Spain suggest the nation’s Formula 1 Grand Prix could return to Jerez from 2021.
The future of the race has been uncertain at times this year with initial reports the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya would not renew its contract and make way for the Dutch GP before announcing a one-year extension for 2020.
Beyond that, however, it now seems the Spanish GP could return to Jerez for the first time since 1990 with the Andalusian local government ready to support a three-year deal worth a total of 66m Euros.
“The City Council has been working for two years to get Formula 1 back to Jerez,” said Mayor Mamen Sanchez.
“We are the administration that has started this but as a reminder, we have a confidentiality agreement, so that I hope and wish that those who divulge the news first will not upset the negotiation.”

Of course, Jerez’s history in F1 extends well beyond 1990 with the circuit hosting the infamous European Grand Prix of 1997 where Jacques Villeneuve became champion after colliding with Michael Schumacher.
More recently, the venue was used for winter testing venue until 2015, hosted a standalone F2 round in 2017 and of course welcomes MotoGP every year.
To accommodate the return of F1, another report has revealed possible circuit changes being considered, including a tightening of Turn 1 and reconfiguration at the Dry Sac hairpin.
All of this is of course to be confirmed.
