Stroll says Perez deserves Red Bull seat but chances appear low

Racing Point owner Lawrence Stroll believes Sergio Perez “deserves” a chance at Red Bull after his win last Sunday at the Sakhir Grand Prix.

The Mexican worked his way from the back of the field after Lap 1 to be in the right place at the right time to capitalise on Mercedes’ capitulation and finally claim his first Formula 1 victory on his 190th Grand Prix start.

For Perez, it was a moment that perfectly wrapped up his seven-year stint at the Silverstone-based team, which began during its days as Force India in 2014, and Stroll paid tribute to Perez, who will be replaced by Sebastian Vettel for 2021.

“Checo has been a fantastic asset,” he told Sky Sports. “He’s been an asset for this team a long time before I’ve arrived.

“I think he most definitely proves every weekend he deserves to be in the car next year and I hope he’s in that Red Bull next year.”

If Red Bull did take Perez for 2021, team boss Christian Horner confirmed last week that Alex Albon would face a “year on the bench”.

However, asked if he had a strong chance of replacing the Thai driver, Perez was doubtful.

“No, I don’t think [so] to be honest. My picture is getting clearer,” he told the UK broadcaster.

“If I am not on the grid next year, I already have options to come back in ‘22 so I am at peace with myself.

“If I have to leave here, I am more than committed to doing so but then I am more determined than ever to be back for 2022 because I believe this is the place I need to be.

“I’m only 30 years old so I’ve got my best years ahead of me and I’m determined to come back strong.”

While many have voiced dismay at the idea of Perez not being on the grid next year, the 10-year veteran isn’t too surprised that talent and even money isn’t always enough.

“That’s just how F1 works,” said Perez.

“It can be very tough and unfortunately the best drivers don’t always drive in F1. We keep pushing and delivering results, that’s the best way to get it done.”
