Team Uematsu make their GT World Challenge Asia debut this season after becoming the latest outfit to submit a Japan Cup entry.

The four-round championship within a championship takes place at Suzuka, Fuji, Sugo and Okayama, which also collectively comprise two thirds of Asia’s pan-continental calendar.

The regular season begins at Sepang on May 20-22 before Mandalika concludes the campaign in October.

Team Uematsu has previously contested Japan’s high profile Super GT series but returns to competition for the first time as its own entity in 12 years when its McLaren 720S GT3 joins the Japan Cup grid at Suzuka on July 15-17.

Behind the wheel is an amateur driver crew with extensive experience of Japan’s circuits.

Team owner Tadao Uematsu helped the same McLaren, albeit run by ABSSA, to finish second overall in last season’s Super Taikyu ST-X (GT3) standings. He was also ST-TCR champion in 2018 and ‘20, previously competed with his own team in Super GT, and has extensive experience aboard other GT3 machinery.

Likewise his co-driver Yudai Uchida who raced against Uematsu in Super Taikyu’s top category and helped Kondo Racing clinch 2016’s ST-X teams’ championship. He has since won the last three ST-Z class titles aboard Endless Sports’ Mercedes-AMG GT4.

Team Uematsu and its drivers are just the latest in an extensive list of Super Taikyu regulars to confirm their Fanatec GT World Challenge Asia Powered by AWS participation this year. Reigning GT3 champions D’Station Racing as well as ABSSA, Porsche Center Okazaki and CarGuy Racing will also be on the grid when the Japan Cup element kicks off at Suzuka later this year.
