Tuscan GP: Bottas leads Mercedes 1-2, Norris crashes in Practice 2

Valtteri Bottas completed a Friday sweep as he topped the times again in Practice 2 at the Tuscan Grand Prix.

The Mercedes driver lowered his morning benchmark by just under a second as he posted a 1m16.989s on the soft compound tyre.

That gave Bottas a two-tenths advantage over Lewis Hamilton in second, as Mercedes assumed their customary places in first and second.

Max Verstappen though is firmly in the mix in third, less than half a tenth behind the six-time world champion.

Alex Albon was 0.9s down on his Red Bull teammate in fourth, but that just put him ahead of the midfield pack led by the two Renaults of Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon fifth and sixth.

Sergio Perez was seventh but may well be in trouble with the stewards after tagging Kimi Raikkonen into the gravel at Turn 1, moments after coming out of the pits.

Speaking of the Finn, he enjoyed a much-improved session in ninth for Alfa Romeo, ahead of the two works Ferraris as Charles Leclerc was 10th and Sebastian Vettel 12th.

It was another tricky session for the four-time world champion too, as he spun at Turn 12 during his long run and ground to a halt with a loss of power after the chequered flag.

Lando Norris had the first crash of the weekend in Practice 2, touching the gravel with his left-hand wheels exiting Turn 3 and spinning into the wall on the outside.

That capped off a disappointing day for McLaren as the British team slumped to 13th and 14th.

George Russell is looking in Q2 contention again in P16 for Williams.

While Romain Grosjean completed just five laps in the afternoon due to suspected electrical issues as the two Haas cars brought up the rear.
